VPS Snapshot

Take a snapshot of your VPS with the Snapshot option

A snapshot is an instant image of your server, taken at a specific time. With this manual backup, you will always have a full restore point for your virtual private server (VPS). Sign up to this option in just a few clicks via the OVHcloud Control Panel.

Protect your data and avoid errors

A full, instant snapshot

A snapshot can be used to store an image of the system, with all of its settings and the data on the associated disk. With our option, you can capture one snapshot backup at a time per VPS. Each new snapshot will overwrite the previous one, regardless of your solution.

Additional security for critical actions

Are you planning an update or migration? Plan ahead by backing up your VPS status beforehand. You will then find the elements as they were when you took the snapshot. This option is adaptable to all processes, and is performed without downtime.

Your replicated data, available at any time

The snapshot is copied to a disk located in a different rack to your VPS. It is then replicated three times within the same datacentre. You can access and restore it at any time via the OVHcloud Control Panel.

Anticipate risks and make development easier

Protect your data in the event of an error

Accidents happen, and people make mistakes — which is why we strongly recommend using our VPS Snapshot option to preserve your data. If your infrastructure and applications experience any issues, you can revert your server back to a previous state.

The Snapshot option as a restoration tool

In the event of an outage or cyberattack, complement your backup strategy with the Snapshot option. This provides you with an additional way to restore your data.

Perfect for pre-production and testing

With the Snapshot option, you can set up your pre-production environment, perform your tests over a period of several weeks or months, then revert back to the initial state in one click. This means you get the ultimate peace of mind during development phases, regardless of which operating system you are using (Linux VPS or Windows VPS).

Need more information?

This option is compatible with most of our VPS* solutions

How are my snapshots replicated?

Your snapshots are stored in a specific space, located in the same datacentre as your VPS. The data is distributed within a cluster that ensures triple replication. Your data is placed on different servers, to ensure that it is protected.

After deleting my snapshot, can I retrieve my data?

In this case, we cannot recover your data — it is permanently deleted.

How do I use the VPS Snapshot option?

Need help taking snapshots of your VPS? We recommend referring to our technical guide on the topic.

Are my additional disks also backed up with the Snapshot option?

No, only the system disk of your VPS solution is backed up.

If I restore my VPS with a snapshot, is it then deleted?

No. This backup will remain available until you delete or replace it.

What is the difference between the Automatic Backup and Snapshot options?

The Automatic Backup solution (or auto-backup) takes a copy of your data automatically, and can be scheduled repeatedly. It provides an element of security that can be strengthened over time.
A snapshot is an instant image of your VPS server, taken at a given time. With this manual backup option, you can revert back to a previous state if you make a mistake, or experience an incident.

How do I get more storage space on my VPS?

With our additional storage solutions, you can add disks to your virtual private servers.

Is the Snapshot option available on a shared hosting plan?

No, it is only offered on our VPS ranges (with the exception of the Starter solution). However, our web hosting packages have their own backup options.

What is the difference between a VPS and a dedicated server?

A virtual private server is a technology that comes from virtualising a physical server. By using a VPS, you can avoid the hassle of managing hardware (RAM, CPU, etc.).
Is hardware management not a constraint for you? A dedicated server offers a much higher volume of resources — so you can use it to build complex architectures, add a private network like the vRack, and build highly available infrastructures. You can also deploy other OVHcloud solutions, such as Public Cloud or Hosted Private Cloud.

Our advice for going further

The 3-2-1 rule

The Snapshot option provides additional security for your VPS. We recommend taking regular backups of your data simultaneously, as follows:

  • Make at least three copies of your data.
  • Store them on two separate supports.
  • Ensure that one copy is stored in a different location.

To do this, you can use the Automatic Backup option. It enables you to schedule regular backups of your data. It is replicated three times, and placed on servers separate to the one hosting your VPS.

Disaster Recovery Plan (DRP)

Our backup tools help you protect the data hosted on your solutions. To optimise their effectiveness, we recommend including them in a global strategy, as part of a DRP. As a cloud hosting provider, we provide you with security against attacks aimed at your virtual servers (through our Anti-DDoS protection, for example) — but other threats can put your business at risk. When we consider cyberattacks, network outages and simple human error, it is clear that there is no such thing as zero risk. By setting up this DRP, you can then limit any service interruptions.

To do this:

  • Evaluate how critical your applications are.
  • Define adapted restore and restart times.
  • Choose resilient solutions within your infrastructure. This will minimise the risk of downtime and data loss.

*The price of the option will vary depending on your virtual server’s storage capacity.
