How do I create a private Garry’s Mod server?
When we think of a game that combines freedom and creativity, Garry’s Mod (GMod) often comes to mind, along with Minecraft. Developed by Facepunch Studios and published by Valve, GMod was originally launched as a MOD sandbox (free build) on Half-Life 2 in 2004 and has since become a title in its own right. It is compatible with Linux, macOS and Windows. Its creator, Garry Newman, wanted to give players the ability to build their own environment with the Source engine. It was a great success. Since then, the community has created thousands of game modes and a multitude of public servers. This is how the most popular mods came about, such as Murder, SchoolRP and Prop Hunt. Many vloggers on YouTube and Twitch have also organised multiplayer events around this creative universe of infinite possibilities. You can build your own gaming experience with friends and even organise roleplay games. Unleash your imagination and launch your own GMod server!
Why create a Garry’s Mod private server?
Garry’s Mod offers great creative potential. However, depending on your preferences and the number of players, you may struggle with the game’s performance. Creating a new GMod server requires resources that your personal computer and internet connection cannot provide. The solution: create a virtual private server (VPS).
There are official community servers, which offer unique ways of playing via mods. The community is active and has many ideas. But if you want to create your own mod or secure access to a server, you will need to create your own.
There are many areas to explore:
- Create a roleplay game
- Build a test environment
- Reconstruct one of your favourite movies
- Build a PvP battlefield...and more.
An entire universe is just a click away: the Source engine offers a high level flexibility in its configuration.
From a technical point of view, a private server provides more security than your personal firewall or antivirus software. It offers anti-DDoS protection against distributed denial-of-service attacks.
To get these benefits, take advantage of our Game VPS range.
What are the advantages of hosting my GMod server on a Gaming VPS?
Performance adapted to your budget
Our VPS resources (CPU, RAM, disk space, and bandwidth) are specially designed for gaming, and provide you with an excellent gaming experience. You can increase them at any time, with the option of migrating to a higher solution if your needs increase. We offer a range of solutions to suit your budget.
Your GMod private server deserves a stable environment. Hosted in our datacentres, your VPS will have minimal latency and excellent availability guaranteed by a service level agreement (SLA). A bandwidth capacity of between 250 Mbps and 2 Gbps ensures that your games run smoothly.
A unique gaming experience
Our GMod VPS solutions come with our Anti-DDoS protection, to ward off external attacks and preserve your gaming experience. This exclusive protection is regularly updated by our experts. Your sessions also benefit from the power of our NVMe SSD drives.
What are the steps for creating a private GMod server?
Here is the minimum configuration we recommend for your server:
- 2 virtual processors (vCores)
- 4 GB of RAM
- 500 Mbps bandwidth
- 70 GB to 120 GB disk space
Having 2 cores and 4 GB of RAM is a minimum to ensure satisfactory load speeds. However, if your project expands, you will need to allocate more resources. The 500 Mbps bandwidth is enough to keep your ping (game latency) low. The storage space requirements will vary depending on how detailed your creations are. We give you a range of 70 to 120 GB so that you can also allow for backups.
We therefore recommend our Essential offer as a minimum. Garry’s Mod can be resource-intensive depending on the mods installed, and without a suitable configuration, you can run the risk of getting bugs or crashes. Assess your needs and choose our Comfort solution if you plan to host multiple players.
Once you have selected your VPS, you can start configuring it. Start by choosing your operating system. Windows Server and Linux distributions (including Debian) are usually recommended. Need help setting up your server? Check out our VPS documentation.
Install the GMod server step by step:
- Start your machine and install community add-ons via the Steam Workshop
- From the configuration menu, enter your server name and characteristics (you can also create a custom world from this area)
- Enter your command lines and mods*
- Launch and connect to your server via the GMod game. We advise rebooting your machine before this step.
- You’re ready: play with your friends on your new VPS!
*Many tutorials are available online to help you with this. They will give you details on compatibility between mods. Furthermore, modified configurations that are similar to your project may exist among other community servers. Take a look at them to help you.
