Linux hosting: open source, reliable and secure
Before launching your project, you should think about your choice of web hosting plan. Linux is the most widely used open-source operating system in the world for servers. With its many distributions (Ubuntu, CentOS, Debian, etc.) and ecosystem, it is interoperable and open, offering increased compatibility with your applications and web projects. Security and performance are at the heart of its design, making Linux hosting ideal for any project. Its kernel, and the different distributions that come with it, are supported by a large community and continuous development. As an open-source system, most Linux distributions are free.

Developing websites and applications in a Linux environment
Want to develop your applications in a Linux environment without having to worry about server management? In collaboration with Platform.sh, we developed Web PaaS powered by Platform.sh. It is natively based on a Git CI/CD pipeline, with the integration of your repository service such as GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, etc. Use it to code your applications and websites in a ready-to-use environment, with more than 60 programming languages. Use your usual database and development tools, while OVHcloud takes care of the server management tasks. The GDPR-compliant Web PaaS powered by Platform.sh differs from multi-purpose container solutions in that it is easy to set up, and allows web developers to focus on their core business. Projects can be launched quickly, and can work iteratively and collaboratively – all in perfectly identical and instantly replicable production and development environments. Web PaaS powered by Platform.sh runs on a Debian distribution. This is a working Linux operating system, with the disk almost entirely in read-only mode, with the exception of your mount points.
Host your website on a web hosting plan managed by OVHcloud
If you would like to host your website or e-commerce platform without having to manage your entire system, choose one of our web hosting solutions. Also known as shared hosting, this service is fully managed by our teams. You get a storage space, databases, and features like a free, preconfigured, and ready-to-use SSL certificate. To launch your website in record time, even if you have no web development experience, we offer the best open-source CMSs (PrestaShop, WordPress, Drupal and Joomla!), which can be installed onto your service in one click.
Please note that our web hosting plans are based on the Linux operating system, and that the technical administration is entirely managed by OVHcloud.
Your questions answered
What is Linux?
Linux was created in 1991 by Linus Torvalds, a student at the time. The operating system is what we call “Unix-like”, because its design is based on a Unix system, even if it does not include its source code. Many distributions have been created around Linux, such as Debian, which brings together different independently-developed software. Linux did not find popularity on desktop computers, a market largely dominated by Windows and macOS. However, it is the base of the world’s most popular smartphone operating system: Android. On the server side, Linux and its variations are extremely widespread, regardless of the size of the infrastructures set up.
Should I choose Linux web hosting or Windows?
Linux and Windows operating systems differ mainly in their design. On the one hand, Linux is open-source and free to use, i.e. without any financial element. On the other hand, Windows is a proprietary system developed by Microsoft, part of its ecosystem and sold under licence.
Linux web hosting is mainly used for its open-source design, and all of the customisation possibilities that come with it. It can be used for most projects, from a website to a company’s complex infrastructure, for example.
For compatibility reasons, or to allow your teams to work in a familiar environment, Windows hosting seems to be more suitable. It all depends on the type of project you want to carry out.
Can I get a free web hosting plan?
Perhaps you’re searching for a free web hosting plan rather than Linux hosting. At OVHcloud, you receive our Start10M solution when you purchase a domain name. This is a free 10 MB web hosting plan, along with a 5 GB email account. While you can easily host a web page on it, you will need to subscribe to a web hosting plan if you want to go further. A website requires disk space adapted to its size, a database, and better resources in order to function effectively.
How do I get an affordable web hosting plan?
Shared hosting has been designed as a cost-effective, easy-to-use solution. It allows most companies and individuals to host their websites without any knowledge of network or web server administration. For your blog or personal website, opt for an affordable web hosting plan with OVHcloud.
What do I need for my website?
In order for your website to work, it needs two main elements: an address, called a domain name, and a hosting package, which stores the website’s files and distributes them on the web. As a hosting provider, we offer a comprehensive solution, including a web hosting plan with a free domain name*. Of course, a website’s needs do not end with a domain name and storage space. That’s is why we include different services, such as a free SSL certificate to enable HTTPS, the ability to host multiple websites on a single space, and our anti-DDoS protection.
How can I save money with Linux and cPanel hosting?
Do you manage several websites, each with their own web hosting plan? With a Linux and cPanel hosting solution, you can save money by consolidating all of your websites. Available with our VPS and dedicated servers, cPanel is a web administration interface that simplifies your website management.
