Find an available domain name for my business

How do I know if a domain name is available?

In the search bar at the top of the page, enter the domain name you want to check (with or without the extension). After opening the results page: If the domain name is free, it will appear as ‘Available’, otherwise it will be displayed as ‘Not Available’.

What do I do if the domain name I want is unavailable?

  • Perhaps another extension would work? We offer a full list of various extensions that may be suitable for your business, whether you work in tourism, technology, development, e-commerce, or more. You can also reserve one or more domain names.
  • It’s also possible to contact the domain name owner via our WHOIS service. Use this tool to get extra information, such as the date your domain name was created and its registry.
  • Another solution is to buy an aftermarket domain name, provided that it is available for sale. If it is, an ‘Available for purchase’ label will be visible. We act as a trusted third party between you and the reseller to secure the transaction and transfer operations.

How do I choose a domain name for my business?

Choose a simple name

The shorter your domain name is, the easier it is to spell and remember, and the more likely your audience will be to visit your website. Don’t forget that your domain name can also be used in an email address. What’s more, some special characters may be rejected by email protocols.

Choose an identity that reflects your business

Your audience should understand your business at first glance. For example, if you have an e-commerce website, the .shop extension is ideal for directing your visitors. If you have a website dedicated to tourism in your region, choose a .info to best guide users. We strongly recommend browsing the full range of extensions available in the catalogue, in order to find the most suitable domain name, If your budget is limited, we offer a selection of domain names at an affordable price.

Choose a domain name that optimises your organic SEO

To get the best SEO visibility, describe your business by combining keywords with strategic extensions. Your domain name should be linked to the future content on your website. Also consider local SEO: for example, if your business is mainly located in France, choose the .fr extension. Note that in the aftermarket, the domain names available for sale are already listed. Often referred to as “high value-added domain names”, they can be a strategic choice for getting your business off to a flying start.

Your questions answered

What is a domain name?

A domain name is your image on the internet. It is directly attached to your IP address to redirect visitors to your website. For example, “www.ovhcloud.com” is our company’s URL. It consists of three elements: the domain, subdomain and extension. Here, “www” is the subdomain: a flexible element that you can optimise to point to other parts of your site. For example, we have created a subdomain called careers.ovhcloud.com, for job vacancies. Next, “ovhcloud” is the primary domain. Finally, the “.com” part is a generic top-level domain (gTLD). Some TLDs have specific features; for example, some can refer to a country (country code TLD), as in the case of a national domain name.

What is a domain name registry?

This is an organisation that owns different domain names. In France, for example, AFNIC is the registry for the .fr extension. Another example is Verisign, which owns .com. Their role is to monitor the distribution of domain names under their responsibility. Each registry operates according to its own rules. There are associations like AFNIC, along with for-profit companies, like VeriSign. Generally, they have administrative data associated with the domains they manage. To do this, they create a zone file that contains the addresses of the server names linked to these domain names. Registries are supervised by ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), which embodies the authority over domain names.

What is a domain name registrar?

A registrar takes care of all administrative procedures relating to domain names (creation, renewal, transfer, change of owner or deletion). OVHcloud is a registrar. We are accredited by AFNIC to provide you with a hosting service and to create domain names. In short, we act as an intermediary between you and the registry.

How do I register a domain name?

Generally, you will need to confirm this with the registry that manages it. For example, if you create a website named www.monsite.fr, it will be registered by AFNIC. As a registrar, OVHcloud facilitates all of the steps and operations required for registering your domain.

How do I find a domain name holder?

By using our WHOIS service, you can access a range of information about the domain name holder. Simply enter the domain name you are interested in. Please note that some information may be hidden at the request of the owner. They must do so in compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

How do I get a domain name?

Once you have entered your domain name in the search bar, select the one that suits you best. Our tool can offer you several combinations with different extensions (e.g. mysite.com, mysite.fr, mysite.info, etc.). Once you have chosen, you can place your order directly via the OVHcloud Control Panel.

How do I link a domain to my website?

You must have a web hosting plan in order to perform this action. If you do, simply select a web hosting plan from our solutions, and link your domain name to it in your control panel.

How do I delete a domain name?

If you would like to change your identity online, you need to contact the registry that manages your domain name. This action is usually performed via your domain name registrar. However, once you have done this, your domain name will no longer belong to you and will be publicly available again.

What is a premium domain name?

It is an optimised domain name that is suitable for a business or industry. It has the potential to be more popular thanks to its simple and easily memorable structure, giving it an interesting strategic advantage for domain name buyers. However, their price is generally higher, which may be justified by the visibility potential they represent.
