Combined with our scalable virtual server technology, Ubuntu VPS offers an excellent low-cost alternative to proprietary software and physical servers – enabling you to explore the world of open-source without limitations.

Choose Ubuntu VPS if you are:

  •     Hosting a website
  •     Developing software or applications
  •     Creating containers
  •     Hosting a CRM, portal or intranet
  •     Hosting an email system
  •     Storing data, files and databases

What is a VPS?

A Virtual Private Server (VPS) is a private environment within a shared server that uses virtualisation to emulate a dedicated server. As no there is no hardware for you to manage, VPS solutions are less complicated and more affordable than dedicated servers. They can be used to host websites, email systems, applications, databases, development projects and more. We offer a range of cheap VPS solutions to suit everyone.

What is Ubuntu?

Ubuntu is an open-source OS or distribution built on the Linux platform. It is simple to use and customisable - making it popular with developers and businesses that want the freedom to create their own experience. Because Ubuntu is also very secure and reliable, it is widely used by government organisations and large brands, such as Netflix.

What is the best Linux for VPS?

Ubuntu is a popular VPS OS for many reasons. It is user friendly and compatible with most programming languages, including MySQL and PHP, and can be used with containerisation solutions like Kubernetes. It can also be customised to suit your needs and offers excellent support, updates and security. Other strong Linux distributions for VPS are Rocky Linux and CentOS, which are both known for their simplicity and secure builds.

For more advanced Linux users, we would recommend Debian VPS. The Debian operating system is complex and less user friendly than other Linux distributions, but also much more configurable and customisable. Debian is also known for its high level of stability. It doesn’t need lots of updates - apart from mission critical bug fixes and security patching.

Do you offer other distributions?

Ubuntu VPS is a popular choice for our customers, but we also offer other Linux VPS solutions, such as Debian, Fedora, CentOS, AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux. We also provide Windows VPS and recommend this for users with limited experience. It includes the Windows OS and delivers the familiar interface and compatibility associated with Microsoft technologies.

What Ubuntu VPS billing do you offer?

Our VPS solutions are billed monthly and come in four flavours – Value, Essential, Comfort and Elite – to suit your storage and performance requirements. As Ubuntu is an open-source solution, we offer it free of charge. You can also add additional backup, storage and control panel options at checkout.

How do I setup Ubuntu VPS?

You’ll need to purchase one of our VPS solutions and create an OVHcloud account. Once you’ve received full access and login credentials, setup can be performed via the command terminal in Ubuntu. If you need to reinstall or reboot the server, simply use the OVHcloud Control Panel. Read our documentation for detailed information on how to setup VPS solutions.

Can I get a web hosting control panel?

The OVHcloud Control Panel is included with our Ubuntu VPS solution. It helps you to manage your server resources and services. You can also add a web hosting control panel such as Plesk or cPanel to your chosen server at checkout. If you are specifically looking for a VPS and control panel bundle (without an OS) we also offer cPanel VPS and Plesk VPS options.

Does Ubuntu VPS include a domain name and email service?

Ubuntu VPS does not include a domain name or email service. However, we do offer secure domain name and email services at affordable prices. These can be purchased directly through the OVHcloud Control Panel included with your VPS. We recommend purchasing one of our domain name solutions if you are using Ubuntu VPS to build and host a website.

When will my Ubuntu VPS be available?

You won’t have to wait long. Once we receive your payment, your Ubuntu VPS will be available in seconds. You’ll receive a confidential email containing all the information you need to connect your VPS and get started.

Will Ubuntu be pre-installed on my VPS?

Yes. Ubuntu will be installed and ready to use when we deliver your VPS.

What is the difference between VPS and dedicated servers?

A dedicated server is an entire server with its own hardware. Because no resources are shared with other users, dedicated servers offer increased processing and bandwidth speeds, as well as a more controlled environment. However, they are more expensive and require knowledge to manage.

A Virtual Private Server (VPS) is a private segment within a shared server. It uses virtualisation to mimic a dedicated server and keep resources isolated from other users. This offers better performance than a shared server - but a little under of a dedicated server. However, as VPS servers use the cloud and don’t require you to manage hardware, this makes them more flexible, scalable and affordable than dedicated servers.

Can I use a VPS to host several websites?

Yes. You can partition a VPS and allocate private space to multiple websites, applications and projects. A web hosting control panel (such as Plesk or cPanel) can help you to do this easily. You can add one of these control panels to your order at checkout.

Is Ubuntu VPS suitable for containerisation?

Yes. Ubuntu is an excellent platform for running containers as it has the latest kernels and security capabilities to support containerisation solutions such as Kubernetes and Docker.
