Executive summary

At the touch of a button the network is ready. Connectivity with Inter.link is that simple. The Berlin telecommunications company has set itself the task of providing sustainable, certified, network-as-a-service solutions to companies of different sizes in different industries. In addition to traditional Internet access, carbon-neutral IP transit and flexible Ethernet connectivity, the innovative range of network services includes integrated protection against DDoS attacks. With over 2400 peers, Inter.link offers customers a robust backbone network that enables high penetration with low latencies. To provide its network functions, the company relies on OVHcloud’s Public Cloud offering, including Managed Kubernetes, as well as self-hosted dedicated servers for monitoring network devices.

The challenge

Inter.link is a carrier working towards being carbon-neutral, with the aim of enabling companies to have sustainable, robust and secure network connections. Over time, they developed the idea of offering customers easy-to-access network functions—accessible via just one click—whilst also integrating protection against DDoS attacks directly at network level. To do this, Inter.link was looking for a cloud provider that could deploy the virtual infrastructure they required. Most importantly, they were looking for public cloud services that were not only cost-effective, but also included Managed Kubernetes for easy orchestration of network functions. Inter.link was also looking for a broad cloud portfolio, including object storage and load balancers, to distribute the load accordingly.

The solution

Inter.link chose OVHcloud's Public Cloud Services. The cloud provider was particularly impressed by OVHcloud’s extensive product portfolio, including Block Storage and Managed Kubernetes, as well as its cost-effective deployment. With Managed Kubernetes from OVHcloud, Inter.link provides its customers with a web service that allows them to order network products independently and without manual configuration via a platform. An intuitive dashboard allows customers to easily assemble and order their required network resources with a single click.

Our network solution has evolved significantly over time. With OVHcloud we were always able to find the right service for our requirements.

Inter.link also uses other OVHcloud Kubernetes clusters to run network functions. The Kubernetes clusters are distributed over two environments: one for staging and testing, and the other for production. The test environment, a so-called container lab, uses Inter.link’s network to stage and test innovative methods to develop their products.

Inter.link's DDoS protection provides fast and comprehensive defence against attacks that target network service congestion and is integrated into all IP products at network level. Inter.link’s network comprises a 100G and 400G backbone with particularly fast data transmission and 100% uptime guarantee. The company therefore enables secure and robust Internet services for everyone: from the datacentre operator to the TV streaming provider and energy supplier. Customers include partimus, a datacentre operator which enables fast and reliable data traffic between their datacentre in Limburg and customers in Frankfurt with the IP transit of the carrier.

The result

With support from OVHcloud, Inter.link is setting new standards in the area of network-as-a-service. The agile cloud infrastructure enables fast innovation, flexible scaling and the highest level of security — all while keeping costs under control. The result: Highly accessible network solutions that meet the most demanding requirements, available in minutes. Managed Kubernetes is used for the web-based network platform. In addition, Inter.link relies on self-hosted dedicated servers—so-called bare metal servers with VMware virtual machines—which enable support and monitoring of network devices.

Thanks to our close cooperation with OVHcloud, we can develop, test and scale new services in the shortest possible time — without complex entry barriers or high up-front costs. As a result, we don’t just offer our customers Internet access; we provide an individually orchestrated, secure and sustainable network experience at the click of a button.

In the future, Inter.link plans to establish a direct connection between its own datacentres and OVHclouds’ to enable even more seamless integration, and to run network monitoring via OVHcloud servers. In addition, particularly performance-sensitive workloads on hardware and virtualisation clusters will also be managed by OVHcloud. The company wants to reduce complexity in order to spend more time on core tasks.
