Your questions answered
What is Valkey?
Valkey is an open source, key-value (in-memory) data storage system, developed by the Linux Foundation. It was created in 2024 as a fork, following a change in Redis’ licensing. Valkey is mainly used in developing applications for caching, session management, and real-time analysis.
What is OVHcloud Databases for Valkey?
This solution is a Database as a Service (DBaaS). We integrate the Valkey database management system on one or more of our instances, and provide it as a turnkey service. We take care of its management and administration (configuration, maintenance, backups, security, and scalability). That way, you can focus on your core business and growth. In short, Databases for Valkey is a cloud database service that saves you time.
Why is Valkey a popular database?
Valkey’s superior in-memory storage is why it’s so popular. This feature also makes it ideal for low-latency performance applications, such as caching, session management, and real-time analytics. Moreover, its open-source nature, coupled with Linux Foundation backing, fosters a large and active community, and ensures both transparency and scalability.
Is Valkey more efficient than Redis?
Valkey and Redis share similar underlying technologies. Valkey aims to achieve Redis-level performance while maintaining open and transparent administration. How well it works depends on the specific use case. Please note that we also offer databases for PostgreSQL and Kafka.
What is the difference between the Essential and Business service plans?
Choosing between the two is easy for our users. Each service level offers a range of instance options, varying in RAM, CPU, and storage capacity. Most importantly, each level is designed to suit specific use cases. For instance, if you’re starting out or working on pre-production, the Essential plan is the best choice. Conversely, if you’re aiming for more resilience and consistent uptime in your production environment, then our Business plan is the way to go.
Can I migrate to nodes with a higher capacity?
Yes. As your RAM or storage requirements increase, you can switch to nodes with a higher capacity to better meet your needs.
Is Databases for Valkey integrated with Public Cloud?
Yes, this solution can be used as part of a Public Cloud project. You can manage this from the OVHcloud Control Panel.
Can I connect Databases for Valkey to my Bare Metal server or VPS?
Yes, you can do this via a public or private network. However, if you opt to deploy Valkey on your Bare Metal server or VPS, you’ll need to handle the setup, database administration, and ongoing management.
What is the difference between 1-AZ and 3-AZ regions?
Discover deployment resilience in our dedicated guide.
1-AZ regions use a single availability zone with one or more datacentres. While they offer protection against server and driver failures, they can be vulnerable to datacentre failures, which in turn can cause access issues.
In comparison, 3-AZ regions provide true fault isolation with 3 independent availability zones, each with isolated power, cooling, and network. This architecture means that services remain available even in the event of an entire zone failure.
Get peace of mind with 99.99% SLAs.
Can I migrate my 1-AZ workloads to a 3-AZ?
Yes! It is certainly possible to migrate from a 1-AZ region to a 3-AZ region.
You can connect 1-AZ regions to 3-AZ regions via private connectivity to optimise the complexity and cost of your infrastructure deployments.
