These tools query public geolocation databases to return the geographical location — typically including country, region, and city — associated with a given public IP address. Using the command prompt (tracert / traceroute)

A more technical approach is to use the command prompt on your device. The tracert (Windows) or traceroute (Linux/macOS) command traces the path that data packets take from your device to the target server, revealing the network hops along the way. To use it, open your command prompt and type:

    tracert [your server IP or hostname]

How to check my IP address?

Your server's public IP address is its unique identifier on the global network. Knowing it is essential for configuring domain names, setting up DNS (Domain Name System), managing firewall rules, and performing geolocation checks. Here are the most common methods:

  • Via your hosting control panel: your public IP address is always displayed in your OVHcloud Control Panel under your server's management page.
  • Via command prompt: on Linux/macOS, run the command: curl ifconfig.me or ip a. On Windows, open the command prompt and type: ipconfig — your IP address will be listed under the relevant network adapter.
  • Via an online IP lookup tool: simply visit an online address lookup tool in your browser — it will automatically detect and display the public IP address of the device or server connected to the internet.
  • Via a PHP file: for web servers, you can create a simple PHP file containing <?php echo $_SERVER['SERVER_ADDR']; ?> to display the server's IP address directly in the browser.

 

Do you want to find IP addresses of devices on a private network? On Linux, the command ip a lists all network interfaces and their assigned addresses. On Windows, ipconfig in the command prompt will show all network adapters, including those connected to a private network.
