FAQs

What is a VPS?

A Virtual Private Server (VPS) is a private segment within a shared server. It mimics the performance of a dedicated server and offers cost-effective, powerful hosting. People use a VPS when they want to host websites, databases, applications or other projects. VPS hosting is ideal for most use cases, but shared hosting or dedicated servers might be better suited to your needs.

What is KVM VPS?

A KVM VPS is a Virtual Private Server (VPS) combined with Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM) virtualisation software. It is designed to provide more efficient hosting and virtualisation capabilities than a standalone VPS. KVM is integrated into the Linux kernel and turns it into a hypervisor. This allows you to run multiple virtual machines, each with its own isolated environment and dedicated resources.
Not to be confused with the KVM remote console (Keyboard, Video, Mouse), which allows you to access your VPS as if you were physically in front of it. This feature is available via your OVHcloud Control Panel or the OVHcloud API (see below).

Who uses KVM VPS?

Businesses and individuals use KVM VPS to:
•    Create virtual machines
•    Host websites or email systems
•    Host gaming servers
•    Resell VPS hosting solutions
•    Host other resource intensive projects

What is the difference between KVM and OpenVZ?

KVM and OpenVZ are both popular VPS virtualisation solutions. However, they are both quite different. KVM can run any OS, but OpenVZ only runs Linux. KVM also isolates resources and keeps them private, whilst OpenVZ shares resources with other users on the node. This makes KVM a better performing solution and suitable for even the most resource-heavy projects. OpenVZ is recommended for smaller projects or anyone looking for a more affordable virtualisation solution.

Is KVM VPS faster than a standard VPS?

Yes. KVM is built in Linux, so is therefore highly flexible and scalable. It offers the quality of a top tier hypervisor and allocates resources efficiently during high traffic demand. KVM also isolates resources and keeps them private - ensuring other users and websites cannot disrupt performance or security.

Can I access the KVM remote console for my VPS?

Yes. A KVM remote console (Keyboard, Video, Mouse) is available via your OVHcloud Control Panel or through the OVHcloud API. It provides direct access to your VPS, as if you were physically in front of the machine. This is particularly useful for troubleshooting configuration errors or performing advanced system maintenance. Check our documentation for more details.

What KVM VPS billing do you offer?

Our VPS solutions are billed monthly and come in four different flavours to suit your performance requirements - Value, Essential, Comfort and Elite. KVM is open-source, so is provided free of charge, as is the Linux OS. However, you will need to pay extra if you choose the Windows OS. Additional storage, backup and control panel options can also be added at checkout.

Will I get a web hosting control panel?

You can add a web hosting control panel, such as cPanel or Plesk, to your order at checkout. We also include the OVHcloud Control Panel with all our VPS solutions, which enables you to manage your server resources and services easily.

When will my KVM VPS be available?

It doesn’t take long! Once we receive payment, your KVM VPS will be available within seconds. You’ll also receive an email containing all the details you need to connect and get started.

What other VPS solutions do you offer?

We offer a range of cheap VPS solutions to suit everyone. Some of our most popular VPS solutions include VPS Linux and Windows VPS. If you need help deciding, contact us to discuss your requirements.

What is the difference between KVM VPS and other hosting solutions?

There are three types of hosting solution – dedicated servers, shared hosting and VPS servers. Each option offers different levels of performance and affordability.
Dedicated servers offer the highest performance. You get an entire server to yourself with no shared resources. This provides greater speed, reliability and security – making such servers ideal for anyone requiring more control over their environment or running resource intensive projects. However, such quality comes at a cost and dedicated servers can be expensive and difficult to manage.
With shared hosting, you get a section of a shared server. This is the most simple and cost-effective option, however, sharing resources can decrease performance and security, especially if the other users have resource-heavy websites or suffer a cyber-attack. Shared hosting is therefore best for small projects with low traffic, or users that just want a cheap and easy solution.

VPS servers, such as KVM VPS, offer the best of both worlds. Just like shared hosting, a VPS server provides a slice of a shared server, however, it uses virtualisation to keep resources isolated and private. This provides better performance and security than a standard shared server, but less than a dedicated server. As they are cloud-based and require no hardware, VPS solutions are also more affordable and scalable than dedicated servers. You’ll need more technical skill to understand VPS technology, but other than that, VPS hosting is a great choice for most use cases.
