For more than 25 years, our commitment to innovation has been focused on making the cloud more responsible, to reduce our - and our customer’s - carbon footprint.
At OVHcloud, we have been using our proprietary water cooling technology at scale to cool down our servers since 2003. This unique approach allows us to operate our datacentres with no air conditioning, thereby reducing our energy consumption.

Moreover, as the only cloud provider manufacturing, disassembling and upcycling its own servers, our customers benefit from optimised costs, a safer infrastructure and an accessible range of servers, thanks to our second-and third-life servers. We strive to be transparent on our full environmental impact and educate our customers to guide their choice of consumption.

Reducing emissions

Reduce GHG emissions from Scope 1 and Scope 2 by 73.4% in absolute terms by 2030, and GHG emissions from Scope 3 by 52% per unit of value added within the same timeframe, in line with the Paris Agreement. 1

Zero waste to landfill

We are committed to zero waste to landfill by 2025 on waste generated by our manufacturing processes, with a consistent geographical scope.

For Scope 3: in particular through the circular approach and sustainable procurement for IT components, optimisation of freight and travel.

Our results

We have been reporting our annual indicators since 2021. We calculate our PUE over the 12 months of the year and over a scope of 88% of our datacentres. We are also ISO30134-2 compliant for the PUE and ISO30134-9 for the WUE.

OVHcloud industrial model

We are the only global cloud provider that manufactures and dismantles its own servers.

Our factories, located in Croix, France and Beauharnois, Canada, give us complete control over the design and production processes with significant advantages in terms of innovation, competitiveness and resilience. Our manufacturing process is circular and short: 100% of servers are disassembled after use, and all components are tested before being reused, if possible. Thanks to this vertical model, our servers have a lifespan of at least five years. We extend this circular approach when it comes to choosing the location of our datacentres, restoring old brownfields rather than building new buildings. By choosing OVHcloud, our customers also benefit from this model while optimising their own carbon footprint.

 

Water cooling: an innovation in our datacentres

Since 2003, we have been developing, using and refining our water cooling system to dissipate the heat emitted by CPUs and GPUs.

By taking advantage of the lower thermal resistance of water compared to air, we are constantly refining our cooling techniques in order to achieve the best energy use efficiency (PUE) and water use efficiency (WUE) indicators on the market for each datacentre.

Taking it further with our carbon calculator

Since 2023, we have offered our customers a carbon calculator allowing them to generate monthly reports on their cloud carbon emissions. The OVHcloud carbon calculator provides transparent and comprehensive information covering Scopes 1, 2 and 3*, from the manufacturing phase to infrastructure operation. To date, OVHcloud is the only cloud provider to offer a comprehensive component lifecycle analysis. Providing our customers with a better understanding of the carbon footprint of their cloud infrastructure is part of a transparent approach that also encourages more responsible practices.
