VPS Backup

Protect your VPS data with automatic backups

Each VPS comes with a Standard automatic backup performed daily, included at no extra cost. For added protection and flexibility, you can switch to Premium automatic backup. In either case, your files and databases are protected in the event of an incident or error. You don't have to manage anything — everything is automated.

Cloud VPS OVHcloud

Quickly get your business back up and running in the event of a technical failure or configuration error

Schedule backups

Your VPS is automatically backed up daily, with backups retained for 24 hours as a standard feature. The Premium option offers more flexibility, as backups are kept for 7 rolling days, and you can set your preferred backup time. This way, you can adapt your backup strategy to suit your business needs.

Protect your data

Whether you use Standard or Premium automatic backup, your data is exported to our infrastructure and replicated three times within the same datacentre, on servers separate from the one hosting your VPS. This way, if your primary server fails, your information will remain available on another server, and can be restored easily via the OVHcloud Control Panel.

Restore your VPS when you need to do so

You can use backups to restore your VPS at any time from the OVHcloud Control Panel. In the event of an incident, you can recover your data at any time.

Everyday data protection

Updating an operating system or software package can be a complex task. Even a minor error can cause your website or business software to malfunction or stop working.

Scheduling regular backups of your data is vital for your business. It’s also important to ensure that your backups are easily recoverable. The OVHcloud Control Panel gives you easy, permanent access to the seven latest backups of your virtual environments.

Disaster Recovery

Replication and planning ahead

Setting up a disaster recovery plan, including backups, is vital for preventing any incident that could affect your IT system. To choose the best solution, think about how critical your data is.

The data stored on your VPS can also be replicated to ensure its safety. With replication, you can retrieve an earlier version of your virtual machine.

How do I retrieve an automatic backup of my VPS?

You can access your VPS backups via the OVHcloud Control Panel. Need help with this? We recommend referring to our technical guide on the topic.

If I cancel my server, how long will my data be stored for?

Your data is archived for a period of 30 days after the effective cancellation date of your VPS. After this period, the data is deleted.

Are my additional disks also backed up by the automatic backup option?

No, only the system disk is backed up. We also recommend taking copies of any additional storage space.

How long does it take to restore my VPS?

This operation depends on the volume of data stored on it. Restoration may take from a few minutes to several hours.

If I have the Premium automatic backup option and I upgrade my disk, will the price increase?

Yes. The price of the Premium automatic backup option varies depending on the storage capacity of your VPS. If you migrate to a higher solution, you will be billed on a pro rata basis for the days remaining in the current month.

When I use an automatic backup to restore my VPS, is it then deleted?

No, the copy is kept in all cases.

Which VPS solutions offer automatic backups?

All of our VPS solutions include the Standard automatic backup option. The Premium automatic backup is an optional add-on for all configurations.

Which VPS should I choose?

Our VPS solutions differ in terms of vCPU, RAM, disk space and available bandwidth. Ingress and egress traffic are unlimited*. Choose your solution based on the resources your web projects require. Please note that there are other options available to customise your VPS.

Our advice for going further

3-2-1 rule

This best practice involves implementing an effective backup strategy:

  • Make at least three copies of your data.
  • Store them on two separate devices;
  • Each copy is stored in different locations.

With our automatic backup option, you can easily meet some of these recommendations. Triple replication is done automatically. The copies are placed on servers separate to the one hosting your VPS.

Disaster Recovery Plan (DRP)

We offer backup tools to help protect your data. To be optimal, they have to be part of a security plan, such as a DRP. Even if your hosting provider delivers a certain level of protection against external attacks (e.g. anti-DDoS protection), there are still other security threats — like cyberattacks, network outages or simple human error. There is no such thing as “zero risk”.

For this reason, we strongly recommend including your backup strategy in your disaster recovery plan.

To do this:

  • Define which services and applications are critical or non-critical in your organisation.
  • Implement a plan for business continuity and data recovery that is adapted to the criticality level.
  • Choose high-resilience solutions for the most sensitive data, so you don’t suffer any data loss or delayed recovery time.

* Our VPS solutions in the Asia-Pacific region (Mumbai, Singapore, Sydney) come with a set monthly quota: 500 GB for VPS-1, 1 TB for VPS-2 and VPS-3, 3 TB for VPS-4. Beyond this, the bandwidth is capped at 10 Mbps.
