Configure a Garry's Mod dedicated server
Are you familiar with Prop Hunt or Murder? These are games created on public servers using the Garry’s Mod (GMod) engine. This sandbox environment from the Half-Life 2 game is perfect for providing entertainment that fosters creativity in your community. Offer specific servers centred around roleplay (RP), organise competitions, and unite your players in an unlimited universe.

Why choose a dedicated server for GMod?
Garry’s Mod is an example of a game that has stood the test of time. It was created in 2004, and still fuels the imagination of its community. Its success can partly be attributed to the fact that it is a free tool, where users can create their own game modes. As a result, influencers continue to offer Murder Parties (equivalent to the Werewolf game) — competitive mods created on GMod.
Do your players just want to have a bit of fun with their friends? You can deliver on this, too — no matter which operating system you install (Linux, macOS X or Windows). With a dedicated server, you can offer your community a custom, optimised way to play.
A solution designed for gaming
- Event organisers. Want to launch a powerful RP server for a weekend? Rent a Game dedicated server: it will provide you with the resources you need to ensure stable gaming sessions. You can also host Discord, TeamSpeak or Mumble servers on it. To broadcast an event live, install Twitch on your server and launch your live stream.
- Resellers and hosting providers. Offer custom servers to your community. Pre-configure and offer your players original game modes on a stable, powerful solution (PvP, PvE, free build).
A unique gaming experience
The latest generation AMD Ryzen processors give you the performance you need for your projects. Based on Zen 3 architecture, our machines provide the capacity required for your games. Our water-cooling technology — which is present in all our datacentres — optimises their capacities and provides them with continuous power for enhanced gameplay quality.
Our Game dedicated servers have a bandwidth of up to 1Gbit/s, This way, you get the stability you need for the games you host. Our network of datacentres is spread across the globe, so you can minimise in-game latency by selecting servers as closely as possible to where your players are based. They also come with a 99.90% SLA, so you can offer a lag-free experience for your users.
Anti-DDoS Game Protection
Our Game anti-DDoS protection is included with all of our Game dedicated servers, and protects your users from denial-of-service attacks. It differs from standard anti-DDoS solutions in that it is adapted to UDP traffic, by controlling ingress and egress data — so your players can continue enjoying their game without being bothered by bugs.
In online multiplayer games, every second counts. This is why our Game dedicated servers are equipped with NVMe SSD disks ranging from 500GB to 960GB. They drastically reduce response times, and enable you to perform backups. When you order your dedicated server, you can customise its storage capacity with a wide range of disks.
IPv4 and IPv6 addresses
OVHcloud dedicated servers have a public IPv4 address and several IPv6 ranges. You can also order up to 256 additional IP addresses. Additional IPs are very useful for offering optimal reactivity in the event of an incident — particularly by switching services over more quickly as part of a failover strategy. Also, with the IPMI (Intelligent Platform Management Interface) console — accessible via the OVHcloud Control Panel or via an API — you have a direct connection to your dedicated server. If your server becomes unavailable, you can keep control of it via its public IP address.
What are the steps for creating a GMod dedicated server?
1. Choose your server and setup.
The server model we would recommend is completely dependent on how you intend to use your Game dedicated server — i.e. whether it works in a cluster, or as a standalone machine. For events like LANs and e-sports competitions, we recommend using Game-1 and 2 servers. Check the recommended minimum configuration for a GMod dedicated server. It will depend on the number of players on each server, and the resource usage that is typical for the gameplay mode you intend to offer. Since Garry’s Mod is quite resource-intensive in terms of CPUs, we recommend provisioning additional resources.
If you are a hosting provider and want to create several virtual private servers (VPS) on your dedicated servers, opt for the Game-2 range. Virtualising environments requires a high volume of resources.
Once you have chosen the type of server, you can launch its installation from the OVHcloud Control Panel. First, select your operating system (Windows Server or Linux). You can then log in and configure it to suit your needs, and the specifics of your infrastructure. To help you with this, please refer to our dedicated server documentation.
2. Configure your GMod server.
Follow the recommended steps below to prepare your custom Garry's Mod server:
- You can configure it directly from the Steam Workshop.
- Install the server files via SteamCMD.
- Enter your command lines, admin credentials, and passwords.
- Ensure that UDP ports 1200, UDP ports 27000 to 27020 and TCP ports 27030 to 27039 are open.
- Launch your server for the first time, then reboot it (recommended step).
- Your server is now ready to use.
