What is the difference between Rocky Linux and CentOS?

Both Rocky Linux and CentOS are Linux distributions built from the source code of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). Essentially, they offer a way to use RHEL without the cost of licensing and support.

However, their origins and development approaches differ. CentOS was initially a community project that created a 1:1 binary-compatible clone of RHEL. Red Hat acquired CentOS and eventually changed its direction, making CentOS Stream a rolling-release distribution that acts as a testing ground for RHEL.

This change led to the creation of Rocky Linux by Gregory Kurtzer, a founder of the original CentOS project. Rocky Linux aims to carry on the legacy of CentOS by providing a stable, community-driven, and truly open-source alternative to RHEL.

It follows a more traditional release cycle, like the old CentOS, focusing on stability and providing point releases with bug fixes and security updates. In contrast, CentOS Stream has a rolling release model with continuous updates, which can lead to less predictability.
