Long-term resilience strategies

It is common to use several types of storage media as part of a well-structured backup strategy. The Object Lock feature allows Cold Archive to create an immutable, off-site copy. Object Lock protects data against cyberattacks while ensuring accessibility when needed.

Critical data archiving

Secure storage of sensitive, personal, or business data is a necessity for heavily regulated industries such as healthcare, finance, and insurance. Cold Archive facilitates the long-term archiving of petabytes of rarely accessed data while meeting compliance requirements.

Media file storage

The storage of audiovisual content (live streaming, production, video rendering, etc.) generates an ever-increasing volume of data. Thanks to Cold Archive, you can archive this multimedia content for an affordable price and still access it whenever needed.

Testimonials

UbiCast

“UbiCast’s video hosting platform generates large amounts of data—several hundred terabytes—which is accessed completely randomly for a majority of the content. OVHcloud’s Object Storage service allows us to manage this volume and the associated scalability, while ensuring data protection and sovereignty.”

Your questions answered

What are the differences between the Cloud Archive and Cold Archive solutions?

Cold Archive is designed for very long-term archiving needs (years, even decades), and is based on a magnetic tape architecture. Data restoration, when needed, is billed. It should therefore be performed infrequently, ideally no more than once or twice a year, to minimise archiving costs. The Cloud Archive solution, on the other hand, is suitable for medium-term storage, limiting data access to once per month. This service is ideal for backup purposes.

What are the differences between Cold Archive and Object Storage?

Cold Archive is an Object Storage class, just like the High Performance or Standard classes. The key difference is that restoration fees apply when you access archived data, just as with the Standard Infrequent Access class. It is primarily intended for storing cold data.

The Object Storage range, on the other hand, refers to a storage space intended for unstructured data regularly accessed by users or applications. It covers a wide range of use cases, from hot to warm data, to cold data.

How long does it take, on average, to restore data?

The time it takes to restore data depends on the volume of data to be restored. For datasets in the hundreds of terabytes, the process may take a maximum of 48 hours. For volumes ranging from a few megabytes to a terabyte, restore time can vary from a few minutes to several hours.

What Service Level Agreement (SLA) does OVHcloud guarantee for access to the Cold Archive service?

The SLA guarantees 99.9% monthly availability for accessing the Cold Archive service. The data resilience rate is 11 nines.

Where is cold data stored?

Cold data is stored on magnetic tapes, a technology specifically designed for long-term archiving. This storage option is energy-efficient, making it a more cost-effective choice compared to conventional methods. The Cold Archive class also offers capabilities that enable archiving, while also maintaining the durability and security needed to protect critical data.
