Object Storage for backups
Object Storage for backups
Object Storage is an ideal solution for implementing an efficient, reliable and low-cost backup strategy. Find out how.

A versatile, cost-effective backup solution
Businesses are becoming more reliant on SaaS applications, which are inherently more vulnerable to errors and cyberattacks. That’s why, according to Gartner, three-quarters of organisations will make backing up SaaS applications a priority by 2028* (up from 15% in 2024). Driven by the proliferation of Backup-as-a-Service (BaaS) solutions, this trend also addresses the issue of shared responsibility between the user and provider when it comes to data security in SaaS environments.
Choosing the right service for storing backups is crucial. You won’t access these backups often, but when the time comes to recover them to restore your application after a crash, hack, or human error, you need to be confident about the availability and status of this data.
Whether your backups are completely manual, scheduled or performed using data backup and recovery solutions such as the ones offered by Veeam, you still benefit from the features included in the OVHcloud Object Storage solution: object immutability/locking, version management (the ability to perform incremental backups), or asynchronous replication (to perform a “backup of a backup”).

Backup: the advantages of Object Storage

Maximum interoperability
With S3 API** compatibility, you can easily interface your backup-as-a-service (such as Veeam or HYCU) or orchestration solutions (such as Kubernetes), while backing up your data from on-premises infrastructures or other cloud providers. This flexibility also includes the ability to migrate your data to another provider if you decide to leave us. #reversibility
✅ OVHcloud Object Storage is certified as Veeam Ready
You can also interact with your data via the OVHcloud Control Panel, via the CLI, or via an Infrastructure-as-Code application such as Terraform.

Manageable costs
The “standard” offer, based on HDDs, offers an excellent price-performance ratio, starting from £7/TB per month for a 1-AZ deployment, and £14/TB per month for a 3-AZ deployment. What’s more, scalability is almost infinite: up to 5 GB per object (48 TB with multi-part upload)***.
Incoming and outgoing internal traffic to and from OVHcloud infrastructure is free, as are API calls. Only outgoing public traffic is charged at £0.01/GB (ex. VAT).

Data protection
The security of the data contained in your backups is often overlooked, as it is considered “non-production”. But this neglect can turn into a critical vulnerability. Don't take any chances: enable encryption (SSE-S3 or SSE-C) to protect your data in transit and at rest, configure specific roles and permissions (ACLs), and monitor access through logging. Go further by using the object locking feature, which ensures immutability by preventing unauthorised deletion or modification.
3 use cases, an infinite number of strategies
With OVHcloud Object Storage, you have the freedom to choose how you want to deploy it: single-AZ (one region) or multi-AZ (coming soon to the Paris region). With multi-AZ, your data is spread across 3 sites more than 30 km apart. This way, read/write remains possible even if one of the three datacentres is lost, guaranteeing a 99.9% SLA.
Backup of an OVHcloud infrastructure
Object Storage is the best repository for storing and organising your backups as part of a disaster recovery/business continuity plan (DRP/BCP), whether your architecture is based on bare metal servers, virtual machines or containers.
Backing up an on-premises infrastructure
On-premises infrastructures are especially exposed to incidents. Having a backup in Object Storage protects you against any data loss: it is protected by an erasure coding mechanism to ensure 99.9% durability. Sending data to OVHcloud is free, and the transmission is encrypted.
Infrastructure backup in a multi-cloud context
To make your infrastructure resilient in the event of a cloud provider’s widespread outage, it is important to have a backup with another provider (see the 3-2-1 rule in the box below). With its competitive pricing (storage and outgoing bandwidth), OVHcloud Object Storage is ideal for this scenario, especially as the S3 API protocol guarantees interoperability between providers.
RG System shares its experience
For more than 15 years, RG System (Group Septeo) and OVHcloud have shared the values of a trusted cloud and proximity to its customers, and the ambition of rising to technical challenges every day. In 2024, a milestone was reached when a major migration project for the Object Storage solution was launched.

Implement the 3-2-1 rule with Object Storage
The 3-2-1 rule is an essential strategy for remaining resilient when incidents happen. It is based on three key principles:
• keep at least three copies of data on two separate media
• Store at least one copy off-site and one copy off-line (air gapped)
• Ensure reliable backups to avoid unusable data (hence the extension 3-2-1-1-0)
OVHcloud Object Storage fits perfectly into this strategy, offering an SLA of 99.9% thanks to the erasure coding mechanism. In multi-AZ mode, it increases resilience in the event of an incident affecting an entire datacentre. What’s more, advanced features, such as object locking for immutability and asynchronous replication at a separate site, make it ideal for hosting one or even two copies of your backups in a 3-2-1 strategy.
