VPS Backup Options

Protect your data effectively, while limiting the risk of technical failures or handling errors. To improve your business security, our backup solutions are flexible and customisable to fit your requirements.

Automatic backups of your VPS are created daily and kept for 24 hours. You can access and quickly restore your data anytime via your Control Panel. Protect all your data easily and effectively—at no extra charge.

A week’s worth of daily backups provides extensive data protection. To keep your business running smoothly, you can schedule recurring backups and optimise your backup strategy. For quick and reliable recovery, we store triplicate copies of every file within the same datacentre.

You can take a snapshot to preserve the exact state of your VPS at any given time. Unlike a full backup, this is an instant process requiring no service downtime. You can fully restore your server if an issue occurs during a software update or test.

External storage space

Need more space to store your files and databases? Add an extra fault-tolerant disk using triple data replication.

Service availability and continuity

Add up to 16 additional IPs to host multiple projects, secure your connections, and configure SSL certificates. To maintain service even if hardware fails, each address can be dynamically switched (failover) between your virtual private servers in a matter of seconds. You can also geolocate your IPs in 14 countries to optimise your infrastructure and your SEO.

The OVHcloud Load Balancer distributes load evenly across your services hosted in our datacentres. It handles variable traffic loads smoothly, is fault-tolerant, and delivers optimal response times for a seamless user experience. OVHcloud Load Balancer is a smart option for managing critical applications, busy websites, and highly resilient infrastructure.

Use cases

Deploy a fast and secure gaming server

A lag-free gaming experience hinges on attention to every detail.

An Additional IP for administration isolates your server from player traffic, while snapshots allow for a fast failback if an update causes issues. Go with the right OS for your game engine, and offload maps and mods to external storage without overloading the main server.

Maintain uptime for your online store

Keep your online store running smoothly, even during peak demand.

The Load Balancer distributes the workload across several virtual servers, and Premium automatic backup protect your critical data daily. Large files are kept on an external storage, while transactions use a high-performance, managed database.

Build a shared development space

Building apps as a team requires flexibility and reliability.

Your files are backed up automatically every day. External storage supports high volumes of data, and Additional IPs can be used to partition your environments. Your managed databases are handled by a simple, scalable solution.

Scale your startup’s cloud infrastructure

Get your aim right to start strong and hit your target.

The Load Balancer smooths out traffic surges, and your managed databases absorb the load. Our Professional Services team can guide you in making sound architectural decisions to head off structural problems.

Your questions answered

What are additional IPs (Additional IP option) used for?

With Additional IPs, you can assign a unique IP to each project, isolate services, secure connections and configure SSL certificates. This improves your search engine ranking by linking different IPs to different websites.

Up to 16 geolocated IPv4 addresses can be added from different countries to strengthen network infrastructure. They also help distribute traffic, and can be dynamically switched between multiple virtual servers to maintain service uptime if one fails.

What is external storage?

A highly resilient external drive is available, designed for secure storage and archiving. Data is triplicated and various sizes are available, starting from 5 GB to 100 GB. Just like a USB drive, you plug it into a computer and access it using NFS or CIFS protocols.

This solution is ideal for retaining backups, storing large databases, or offloading your VPS’ main disk.

How does the Standard automatic backup work?

Your VPS comes with automatic data protection via our Standard automatic backup, requiring no manual steps. A backup is created daily and stored for 24 hours. You can access it at any time via the OVHcloud Control Panel; it’s easy to restore if anything goes wrong.

While the service is a primary safeguard against data loss, its logs can only be kept for a few days.

How does the Premium automatic backup work?

The Premium automatic backup enhances protection VPS by storing multiple backup versions. A copy is made every day and stored for 7 rolling days. Backups are triplicated within the same datacentre to ensure fast, reliable recovery.

Alternatively, you can time their creation to minimise server load.

What are the differences between the Standard and Premium automatic backup plans?

The Standard automatic backup creates a daily copy which is deleted after 24 hours. This option isn’t customisable. Every VPS includes this feature, so you can quickly restore your server if a recent issue pops up.

With the Premium automatic backup, you can keep backups for a week. This gives you greater flexibility in restoring previous server versions, especially if an error isn’t detected right away. You can also use this option to set backup times and avoid disruptions during peak use or scheduled maintenance.

How does the Snapshot option work?

A snapshot captures the virtual server’s state at a given point in time. This means that a server can be restored to its previous state, as it was when the snapshot was taken.

Snapshots, unlike backups, are created manually for one-off, specific uses like securing an update or test. Once restored, it’s automatically deleted.

The price of this option varies depending on the disk space you want to back up.

What is the difference between snapshots and automatic backups?

Both snapshots and automatic backups can be used to restore a VPS to a previous state. However, they are used and work differently.

Daily automatic backups run without any user intervention. They give you the option of restoring the server if an issue arises; the Standard plan keeps backups for 24 hours, while Premium keeps them for seven days.

A snapshot, in contrast, is a manually created image of the virtual server’s current state. It’s useful before a critical change or test, but lacks continuous data protection capabilities. Unlike automatic backups, a snapshot is deleted after it’s restored.
