Definition of a VPS

What is a virtual private server (VPS)?

A virtual private server is an isolated environment created on a physical server using virtualisation technology. This solution offers all the advantages of a standard server, with allocated resources and full admin access. You can choose your operating system, as well as the applications you want to use, without any configuration limits.

A VPS offers the benefits of both a web hosting plan and a physical server. It is scalable, offers good performance, and provides an isolated environment while remaining very affordable.

Your questions answered

How do I get started using a VPS?

We can help you with the first steps of using your virtual private server. We recommend reading our guide on Getting started with a VPS. You can choose from a number of different operating systems, including Linux and Windows (excludes the Starter model), as well as applications and CMS tools such as WordPress and PrestaShop. If you would prefer to install a web hosting control panel, you can choose between cPanel or Plesk.

What is the advantage of using a VPS to host websites?

With a VPS, you receive a dedicated storage space to host one or more websites. You get higher performance, and can scale up your resources — CPU, RAM and storage space. A virtual private server can be adapted to suit your needs, and it will also help you control your spending, as you only pay for what you need. You can also choose which datacentre your VPS is hosted in. This means you can order from a datacentre that is closest to your users, minimising latency as a result.

What is the difference between a VPS and a web hosting plan?

The best hosting plan for you will depend on your needs, and your level of technical skill. Web hosting plans are adapted to suit users who do not have any knowledge of server management. It enables them to host a website easily, without dealing with server configuration. For more specific needs, and for those who have experience managing a virtual server, a VPS offers a lot more flexibility (with root access), and increased performance. You get a dedicated environment, with allocated resources that can be increased. A VPS is fully configurable, and can be installed with a number of different operating systems to match your needs.
