Choosing your managed database
Choosing a database
From transactional applications to real-time analytics, choose the engine that’s right for you
Nine fully-managed open source engines, with European sovereignty included. No hidden costs or complexity.
Overview
If you’re an architect or tech lead, evaluating the most suitable database for new use cases and the workloads that will be created on it can be complicated. You want an engine that lines up with your skills – but the most familiar solution is not always the most suitable one for your workload. And when you’re innovating, it’s natural to move away from your comfort zone, without a safety net.
Choosing a database means opting for a solution that will be used for several years. Any specialist knows that by the time you’ve realised you’ve made the wrong choice, migrating costs more than sticking with it. This page is designed to help you decide quickly and accurately, using your use case as a guide.
Each engine listed here meets a specific need: a context, a main constraint, and a reason why the other options would have been a compromise. Browse the use cases, identify your situation, and directly access the OVHcloud service that’s right for you.
Resilience and scalability of a managed database
With a managed database, your cloud provider handles deployment, administration, maintenance, and upgrading, while your team focuses on the product. There are two key decision factors: the scalability and resilience offered by this provider.
In terms of scalability, OVHcloud allows for vertical scaling by increasing instance resources, and horizontal scaling through automatic replication between nodes.
For resilience, the availability level depends on the deployment mode chosen: with OVHcloud, there’s a 99.95% service level agreement (SLA) in 1-AZ or 99.99% in our 3-AZ regions. Plus, no manual reconfiguration is required. Each OVHcloud managed service is deployed in an isolated environment that is compliant with the major market standards.
The three architecture models below illustrate the majority of needs on the OVHcloud portfolio, depending on your workload. Choose the one that fits yours.

Web Stack Standard
The relational database holds the source of truth.
Valkey absorbs the read volume by keeping frequent data in memory.
This model covers the majority of web needs without a complex infrastructure.
Available engines
- PostgreSQL
- MySQL
- Valkey

AI applications
PostgreSQL stores your application data and your vector embeddings in the same engine.
AI Endpoints ensure inference without an ML infrastructure to manage.
This model simplifies RAG and recommendation architectures by avoiding synchronisation between systems.
Available engines
- PostgreSQL + pgvector
- AI Endpoints
- Valkey

Event-driven platform
Kafka decouples producer services from consumer services.
Each event is published once, processed by each service in parallel.
Managed ClickHouse receives the entire stream to power your real-time analytical dashboards.
Available engines
- Kafka
- PostgreSQL
- MongoDB
- Managed ClickHouse

Which engine for which need?
Each workload has its constraints in terms of data volume, acceptable latency, schema structure and consistency needs. Choosing the right engine from the start avoids costly migrations and performance compromises as the application grows. Expand each use case to understand the problem it solves, why the recommended engine is suitable, and what OVHcloud manages for you.
Standard transactional application
Take the example of an e-commerce platform: each order involves updating the inventory, customer balance, and purchase history at the same time. Without strict ACID transactions, a crash during writing can leave your data in an inconsistent state, with a direct impact on customer experience and your accounting records.
PostgreSQL ensures that these operations form an indivisible block, while offering high performance on intensive OLTP loads. With OVHcloud, the service is fully managed: no failover management or maintenance to worry about, meaning that your team can focus on the product.
Web application/rapid development
A startup launching a web application rarely has the opportunity to spend weeks modelling a perfect schema: needs evolve with each sprint, tables are added, relationships change.
MySQL is designed for this pace. It offers native compatibility with major web frameworks and ORMs, almost immediate usability, and reliable performance on high-volume CRUD workloads.
On the infrastructure side, OVHcloud handles configuration, backups, and upgrades, without your team having to get involved. The development team connects with its usual driver and pushes to production the same day.
Flexible schema/documents
A product catalogue in the retail sector or a content management platform faces a structural problem: each product sheet has different attributes. Imposing a rigid relational schema in this context generates repeated migrations and causes a hindrance every time you want to change the catalogue.
MongoDB stores each document independently, which allows attributes to be added as and when, without touching the rest of the data. This model takes on an additional dimension as soon as the application integrates search or personalisation: MongoDB natively supports vector search. The engine therefore allows the product data and the embeddings used for recommendations or semantic search to coexist in the same database.
OVHcloud removes the operational complexity of MongoDB – managing replica set management, index configuration and upgrades, without your team needing to get involved.
Real-time analytics + product metrics
An SaaS platform that monitors its feature usage in real time. An e-commerce website that monitors its conversion rate during Black Friday. A mobile app that detects a behavioural anomaly as soon as it occurs. All these use cases share the same need: to act on the data at the moment it is created, not after.
Managed ClickHouse addresses this problem with an analytical engine capable of querying billions of events and returning results in just a few seconds. The dashboards refresh continuously, so business teams can query directly without having to wait for a nightly batch, and decisions are based on up-to-date data.
OVHcloud offers fully managed ClickHouse, designed for OLAP workloads: its columnar storage allows you to scan only the necessary fields and feed your business intelligence tools at data speed, without having to scale up your infrastructure.
Session caching + real-time counters
A high-traffic web application that queries its relational databases on every request quickly reaches its limits: response times increase and the load spirals out of control. User sessions, frequent query results, or view counters are all read hundreds of times per second but rarely change.
Valkey solves this problem by keeping this data directly in memory, with sub-millisecond response times even under high concurrency. Its native data structures (lists, sorted sets, hashmaps) cover the most common use cases, such as shopping carts, real-time rankings, and authentication token management.
OVHcloud offers fully managed Valkey, with high availability and persistence that are both configurable according to the criticality level of your data. Version upgrades and security patches are applied automatically, without service interruptions.
Full-Text Search + Logs + SIEM
A SecOps team that correlates security events across dozens of log sources, or an application that must offer its users relevant search results over millions of documents, both hit the same wall: relational databases are not designed to index and score free text at scale. Every LIKE query on a large table is a full, slow, and expensive scan.
OpenSearch is designed for this model: it continuously indexes massive volumes of semi-structured data and returns relevance-ranked results in just a few milliseconds. A cybersecurity platform can centralise its system, network, and application logs to detect attack patterns in real time. A SaaS application can connect its user search to offer fuzzy matching, autocomplete, and faceted filtering.
OVHcloud offers fully managed OpenSearch, with configurable indexes and high availability included.
