Multiple Windows licences available*
Host a website on a Windows server
The Windows Server operating system (OS) provides a simplified and automated management of your interfaces. Its centralised system makes it easy to manage user licences and offers high compatibility with your website and web application projects. This OS is suitable for users with limited experience in server administration.
At OVHcloud, you can purchase extra Windows Server licences on our virtual private servers (VPS) and dedicated servers.
- Standard Windows Server licences, suitable for standard server management (VPS and dedicated server).
- Windows Server Datacenter licences, recommended for resource-intensive uses such as virtualisation and containerisation. Please note that these licences provide additional hypervisor, storage and network management features (on a dedicated server only).
Windows Virtual Private Server: a balanced solution
A VPS is a virtual machine created from a physical server, with resources allocated to you. As a flexible and versatile solution, it is suitable for many projects on the internet. Its high performance, combined with its advanced administration functionality, makes it a significant asset. Choosing a Windows VPS is a definite advantage for freelancers and companies launching their business online.
Your VPS is hosted in our datacentres, and we take care of the physical maintenance of the server on which your virtual machine is hosted – so you can focus on its configuration and your core business.
Advantages of a virtual private server
Want to start managing your first web server? Dedicated environment, great freedom of administration, choice of a Linux distribution or a pre-installed Windows Server OS: a VPS is the ideal balance between price and performance.
For which projects?
A virtual private server is suitable for most uses on the web:
- Hosting a website or online store
- Developing and deploying an application
- Creating a video game server
Choose a dedicated server for more capacity
A dedicated server is a physical machine hosted in one of our datacentres, with resources fully allocated to you. As with the VPS, we take care of hardware maintenance, while you manage its configuration, security and usage.
This high-performance solution is optimised for projects that require high computing power and significant network capacity, including:
- Hosting AI projects
- Big data and data analytics
- Data storage and archiving
- Hosting a web infrastructure
- Deploying a virtual desktop infrastructure
- Virtualisation and containerisation
- Hosting critical business applications
We also offer several licences for deploying your Windows dedicated server (Standard and/or Datacentre).
Your questions answered
What is Windows hosting?
Generally, a hosting plan is a shared or dedicated server made available to users. Its administration includes a software layer – in this case, the Windows Operating System (OS). So “Windows Hosting” refers to this combination of server and OS.
Should I choose Linux or Windows for my web hosting plan?
These two systems target different audiences.
Microsoft offers paid licences for its operating systems. This is an additional cost, but they are more accessible to users with less experience managing a server.
Linux is designed according to open-source principles, uses free distributions like CentOS, Ubuntu or Debian, and offers more administration options. However, configuring a hosting plan on Linux requires more technical knowledge.
Which operating system (OS) is best for my shared hosting service?
We take care of the technical administration of your shared hosting plan. You cannot customise your operating system on these solutions. The default OS for these web hosting plans is Linux.
What is the difference between a web hosting plan and a virtual private server (VPS)?
Shared hosting is a server divided between several customers by the hosting provider. Each user's data remains private, but the machine's resources are shared. This type of web hosting plan is essentially an affordable solution.
A VPS is a virtual machine partitioned from a physical server by its software. The environment is dedicated to its user.
What is the difference between a VPS and a dedicated server?
A dedicated server is a machine with its own hardware. It offers more processing, bandwidth and storage capacity. This solution is suitable for resource-intensive uses.
A VPS is a machine created virtually from a physical server. It is a flexible, high-performance solution, suitable for most web projects.
What are the advantages of a VPS, compared to a dedicated server?
A VPS is perfect for creating and/or deploying websites, online stores, and applications. And with the assurance of budget control, you can choose the configuration that best suits your resource needs. If your project expands, our VPS solutions are scalable, so you can migrate to a higher solution.
A dedicated server comes at a higher cost due to its customisation options, and more specific knowledge is required. It is also suitable for larger projects.
What knowledge do I need to manage a VPS?
To launch your web project quickly and easily using a VPS, you will need a basic knowledge of server administration. However, the experience required may vary depending on the operating system you have selected.
If you do not think you have the required skills, you can contact one of our partners via the OVHcloud Marketplace.
Can I host several websites on one VPS?
You can divide your VPS according to your needs – for example, between several websites that each have their own space. To simplify your administration, web hosting control panels like Plesk or cPanel are available.
What do I need in order to start my online project?
A domain name and a hosting plan are required. If you would like to test it out, a 10 MB free web hosting plan is included when you order a domain name.
*The prices of our servers do not include Windows Server licences. You must add one when you place your order to get the final price for your Windows hosting solution.
